Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of files that included little new information.
